RED CUSCO PERU

Pukapukara is an archaeological site located in Cusco, Peru. Its name in Quechua means "red fortress" and is part of an archaeological complex that includes Tambomachay, Sacsayhuaman and Q'enqo. Pukapukara is located about 8 kilometers northeast of the city of Cusco, on the route that leads to the Sacred Valley of the Incas.

This site is conformed by stone structures that served as fortress, in addition to having control and surveillance functions of the territory. Pukapukara is composed of walls, terraces, squares and steps, all constructed with finely hewn stones and fitted into each other without the use of mortar.

It is believed that Pukapukara had a military and administrative purpose, in addition to serving as a resting place for travelers transiting through the area. From this place you have a panoramic view of the valley and surrounding mountains.
